efficacy
Ability to work
Efficacy is the power to produce a desired effect.
The word appears most often in formal or technical contexts: the efficacy of a vaccine, the efficacy of a policy, the efficacy of prayer.
It differs subtly from effectiveness—efficacy measures whether something *can* work under ideal conditions, while effectiveness measures whether it *does* work in practice.
