gillnets

Vertical fishing mesh

Gillnets are fishing nets that hang vertically in the water, catching fish by their gills when they try to swim through the mesh.

The net size is chosen to let fish heads pass through but not their bodies—when they try to back out, their gill covers snag.

Gillnets are effective but controversial because they also trap unintended species like dolphins and sea turtles.
