gillnet

Mesh catching fish

A gillnet is a fishing net hung vertically in the water so that fish swimming into it become trapped by their gills.

The mesh size determines which fish are caught—small fish pass through, large fish bounce off, but fish of the target size wedge in and cannot back out.

Commercial salmon fishermen set gillnets across the river mouth.

As a verb, to gillnet is to fish using this method.
