agaric

Cap-and-gill fungus

An agaric is a fungus with a cap and gills on the underside—the classic mushroom shape.

The term is primarily botanical or mycological; most people just say mushroom.

Some agarics are edible, others deadly poisonous: The fly agaric, with its red cap and white spots, is toxic and hallucinogenic.
