countercurrent

Flow against flow

A countercurrent is a current flowing in the opposite direction to another—whether of water, air, or figuratively, opinion or trend: a countercurrent of dissent ran through the party.

In biology, countercurrent exchange describes systems where fluids flow past each other in opposite directions, maximizing heat or substance transfer.

As an adjective, countercurrent describes this opposing flow: countercurrent cooling systems.
