gillnetting
Mesh snags swimmers
Gillnetting is fishing with a gillnet—a vertical wall of netting that catches fish by their gills when they try to swim through.
The mesh size determines which fish are caught: too small and they pass through, too large and they bounce off.
Commercial gillnetting for salmon has been restricted in many rivers.
The practice is controversial because it can trap non-target species including marine mammals.
