gay rights
Marriage equality movement
Gay rights refers to the political and social movement advocating for equal treatment of homosexual people, or the specific legal protections themselves: the fight for gay rights, gay rights legislation.
The term emerged in the late 20th century as LGBT people organized against discrimination in employment, housing, marriage, and other areas.
Now often expanded to LGBTQ rights or queer rights to include broader identities.
