nonbinary

Beyond the binary

Nonbinary describes a gender identity that doesn't fit neatly into the categories of man or woman.

A nonbinary person may identify as both, neither, or somewhere along a spectrum between them.

The term emerged in the early 21st century alongside growing recognition of gender as distinct from biological sex.
