marriage bans
Forbidden union laws
Marriage bans are legal prohibitions against certain types of marriages.
Historically, bans targeted interracial unions—antimiscegenation laws in the United States prohibited marriage between white and nonwhite people until 1967.
More recently, the term refers to laws prohibiting same-sex marriage: The state's marriage ban was struck down by the courts.
Not to be confused with marriage banns, the traditional public announcement of an intended wedding.
