transgender

Gender identity mismatch

Transgender describes a person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.

A transgender woman was designated male at birth but identifies as female; a transgender man, the reverse.

Often shortened to trans: trans rights, trans women.

The term emphasizes identity over biology, distinguishing it from older clinical language.

Not to be confused with transsexual, which specifically implies medical transition, or with sexual orientation, which is a separate matter.
