homophobia

Hatred of queerness

Homophobia is fear, hatred, or prejudice directed at gay, lesbian, or bisexual people.

The term extends beyond clinical phobia to encompass discrimination and hostility: workplace homophobia, internalized homophobia.

Someone exhibiting such attitudes is homophobic.

The word emerged in the 1970s as gay rights movements named what they faced.
