misfunction

Operate with errors

Misfunction is an uncommon variant of malfunction, meaning to fail to work properly: The engine misfunctioned and stalled.

The prefix mis- (wrongly) substitutes for mal- (badly), though both convey the same idea.

Malfunction is far more standard; misfunction appears occasionally but sounds slightly off to most ears.
