functioning
In working order
Functioning describes something operating or working as intended.
A functioning democracy has effective institutions.
A functioning appliance does its job.
The word often appears where mere operation is noteworthy—implying something might not work, or barely does: a barely functioning government, high-functioning anxiety.
To be functioning is to be getting by, perhaps just barely.
