function words
Structural linguistic particles
Function words are the grammatical glue of English—articles, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, and auxiliary verbs that structure sentences rather than carry content.
Words like the, of, and, to, and is appear constantly but contribute meaning only through their relationships with other words.
They contrast with content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives), which carry independent semantic weight.
Function words are a closed class—new ones rarely enter the language.
