inverse function

Undoes original transformation

An inverse function reverses the operation of another function, taking the output back to the original input.

If a function *f* transforms *x* into *y*, the inverse function *f*⁻¹ transforms *y* back into *x*.

Not all functions have inverses; a function must be one-to-one (each output corresponds to exactly one input) for an inverse to exist.

The inverse function of squaring is the square root.
