Friar Lawrence
Robed romantic meddler
Friar Lawrence is a character in Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet*—the Franciscan monk who secretly marries the young lovers and devises the sleeping potion scheme that leads to their deaths.
His name sometimes appears in discussions of well-meaning interference that backfires catastrophically: He thought he was helping, but he pulled a Friar Lawrence.
