matins

Early morning worship

Matins is the first of the canonical hours in Christian liturgy, traditionally observed before dawn or at midnight.

The word typically appears in plural form even when referring to a single service: The monks rose for matins at 3 a.m.

In Anglican churches, matins (or mattins) often refers to the morning prayer service more broadly.
