apostolate

Religious outreach work

The apostolate is the office, mission, or work of an apostle—originally the twelve disciples of Jesus, now extended to any organized Christian ministry or missionary activity.

In Catholic usage, it describes the collective work of spreading the faith: She devoted herself to the lay apostolate.

The term implies both divine commission and active engagement in religious work.
