A plimsoll is a light canvas shoe with a rubber sole, worn for sports or casual use—what Americans call a sneaker or tennis shoe.
The term is primarily British.
The horizontal line where the rubber meets the canvas resembles the Plimsoll line on ships, which may explain the name.
