overloading

Putting on too much

Overloading is putting too much load on something—a vehicle, a circuit, a person's schedule.

An overloaded truck exceeds its weight capacity; an overloaded outlet trips a breaker.

In programming, overloading lets multiple functions share a name but accept different types of input: The method is overloaded to handle both strings and integers.

Figuratively, information overload overwhelms the mind: I'm overloading on bad news.
