scuppers
Ship deck openings
Scuppers are openings in a ship's side that allow water to drain from the deck.
The term extends to any drainage channel that carries water off a flat surface, as on a roof or balcony.
To scupper something (chiefly British) is to deliberately sink or wreck it: The scandal scuppered his chances at reelection.
The verb suggests sabotage or ruination rather than accidental failure.
