safety line
Fall prevention rope
A safety line is a rope or cable that secures a person to prevent falling or being swept away.
Climbers clip into safety lines on rock faces; workers on scaffolding attach to them; sailors use them on deck in rough weather.
The term extends figuratively to anything providing security against disaster: The emergency fund was our financial safety line.
