tightwire

Stretched performance cable

A tightwire is a taut wire stretched between two points, used by acrobats and performers for walking or balancing acts.

Unlike a tightrope, which is made of rope, a tightwire is metal and offers less give: The performer crossed the tightwire without a safety net.

The term sometimes appears figuratively for precarious situations.
