floatplanes

Pontoon-equipped aircraft

Floatplanes are aircraft equipped with pontoons instead of wheels, allowing them to take off from and land on water.

They're common in regions with many lakes or coastal areas where conventional runways are scarce: The floatplane dropped us at a remote fishing camp in Alaska.

Distinguished from flying boats, which have boat-shaped fuselages rather than separate floats.
