island hopping
Visiting successive isles
Island hopping is traveling through a chain of islands, visiting several in succession rather than staying on one.
The term originated as a World War II military strategy—Allied forces captured select Pacific islands while bypassing others, creating a path toward Japan.
Now it usually describes leisure travel: We spent two weeks island hopping in Greece.
