flying boats
Water-landing aircraft types
Flying boats are aircraft with hulls designed to take off from and land on water, distinct from floatplanes that use pontoons.
They were prominent in early aviation when suitable runways were scarce and water provided unlimited landing strips.
Pan Am's flying boats pioneered transoceanic passenger service in the 1930s.
The type is now largely obsolete, though some remain in service for firefighting and remote transport.
