fjords

Glacier-carved waterways

Fjords are long, narrow inlets of sea between steep cliffs, formed by glacial erosion.

They're characteristic of Norway's coastline but appear wherever ancient glaciers carved valleys that later flooded: The cruise ship navigated the dramatic fjords of Alaska.

The word comes from Norwegian.
