flying boat

Hull-bottomed aircraft

A flying boat is an aircraft with a hull designed to land on and take off from water, distinct from floatplanes that use pontoons.

Flying boats were important for long-distance travel before runways could accommodate large aircraft: Pan Am's flying boats crossed the Pacific in the 1930s.

The design has largely disappeared from commercial aviation.
