Hovering flying machines

Helicopters is the plural of helicopter—an aircraft that lifts off vertically using overhead rotating blades.

Unlike airplanes, helicopters can hover in place, fly backward, and land without runways: News helicopters circled the scene, Medical helicopters airlifted the injured.

As a verb, to helicopter is to transport by helicopter or, informally, to hover anxiously over someone: helicopter parents.
