flak jacket

Soldier's protective garment

A flak jacket is a protective vest designed to shield the torso from shrapnel and bullets.

Originally developed for military aircrew during World War II, the term now covers body armor worn by soldiers, police, and journalists in combat zones: Reporters embedded with troops wore flak jackets.

The name comes from flak, anti-aircraft fire.
