law enforcement
Maintaining public order
Law enforcement is the activity of ensuring compliance with laws, or the agencies and personnel who do this work.
Police departments, sheriffs' offices, and federal agencies like the FBI are all law enforcement.
The term often appears as an adjective: law enforcement officers, law enforcement officials.
It can sound bureaucratic or euphemistic compared to simply saying "police."
