final drive

Torque-multiplying output stage

Final drive is the last set of gears in a vehicle's drivetrain, transferring power from the transmission or differential to the wheels.

The final drive ratio—how many times the driveshaft rotates per wheel rotation—affects acceleration and top speed: a higher ratio means quicker acceleration, a lower ratio allows higher speeds.

The truck's final drive was geared for towing.
