crown wheel
Ring-shaped driving gear
A crown wheel is a gear with teeth projecting at right angles to its face, resembling a crown's points.
In clockwork, the crown wheel engages with a pinion to transfer motion between perpendicular shafts.
In vehicle differentials, the crown wheel (or ring gear) meshes with the drive pinion to redirect power to the axles.
