live axle
Spinning drive beam
A live axle is a shaft that transmits power from the drivetrain to the wheels while also supporting the vehicle's weight.
Unlike a dead axle, which merely holds wheels in position, a live axle rotates with the wheels it drives.
The term appears mainly in automotive contexts: Most trucks still use a solid live axle in the rear.
Live axles are simpler and more durable than independent suspension systems but provide a rougher ride.
