ring gear
Outer toothed circle
A ring gear is a large gear with teeth on its inner or outer circumference, forming a ring shape rather than a solid disc.
Ring gears appear in differential assemblies, planetary gear systems, and starter motors where they mesh with smaller gears to transmit torque.
The starter ring gear on a flywheel allows the starter motor to crank an engine: The mechanic replaced the worn ring gear on the differential.
