oil seal

Lubricant containment ring

An oil seal is a mechanical device that prevents lubricant from leaking out of a machine while keeping contaminants from entering.

Found where rotating shafts pass through housings—in engines, gearboxes, and pumps—oil seals typically consist of a flexible lip pressed against the shaft surface.

Also called a shaft seal or lip seal.
