transaxle

Integrated gearbox assembly

A transaxle is a single unit combining the transmission and axle differential, commonly used in front-wheel-drive vehicles and rear-engine sports cars.

Rather than separating these components with a driveshaft between them, a transaxle integrates power distribution and gear changing into one housing: The Porsche 911's rear transaxle contributes to its distinctive handling characteristics.
