drive unit
Engine and transmission
A drive unit is the component responsible for producing sound in a speaker or headphone—the part that converts electrical signals into audible vibrations.
In audio equipment, multiple drive units may handle different frequency ranges: tweeters for highs, woofers for lows.
The term also applies to motorized mechanisms that power movement in machinery, vehicles, or storage devices like hard drives.
