gear ratio

Sprocket teeth comparison

A gear ratio is the relationship between the number of teeth on two meshing gears, determining how rotational speed and torque transfer between them.

A high gear ratio means more torque but less speed; a low ratio means more speed but less torque.

The concept extends to any system where mechanical advantage is calculated: The truck's gear ratio makes it better for towing than highway driving.
