4x4

All-wheel-drive vehicle

A 4x4 is a vehicle with four-wheel drive—all four wheels receive power from the engine rather than just two.

The term comes from the designation "four by four," indicating four wheels total with four driven. 4x4s are associated with off-road capability and rugged terrain: We took the 4x4 up the mountain trail.

The term also describes a piece of lumber nominally four inches by four inches.
