torque converter

Fluid power transfer

A torque converter is a fluid coupling that transfers rotating power from an engine to a transmission, used in most automatic vehicles.

Unlike a manual clutch, it uses hydraulic fluid rather than direct mechanical contact, allowing the engine to idle while the vehicle is stopped and providing smooth acceleration without gear shifting by the driver.
