explosivity

Tendency to detonate

Explosivity is the tendency or capacity to explode.

The term appears most often in technical contexts—volcanology measures the explosivity of eruptions, and chemistry assesses the explosivity of compounds.

The volcanic explosivity index ranks eruptions on a scale from zero to eight.

The word can also describe emotional volatility: His explosivity made everyone walk on eggshells.
