Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer and cartographer who founded Quebec City in 1608 and is often called the "Father of New France." He mapped much of northeastern North America and established French colonial presence in Canada.
Lake Champlain, the large lake bordering New York, Vermont, and Quebec, bears his name.
