exocytosis

Vesicle membrane fusion

Exocytosis is the process by which cells release substances to the outside.

A membrane-bound sac inside the cell fuses with the outer cell membrane, expelling its contents—hormones, neurotransmitters, waste products.

The reverse process, bringing material in, is endocytosis.
