engineman

Locomotive crew member

An engineman operates or maintains engines, particularly on ships, locomotives, or in industrial settings.

The term is most common in naval contexts, where an engineman is an enlisted rating responsible for propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery: The engineman reported a problem with the starboard diesel.

In railroad usage, engineman is a formal term for a locomotive engineer.
