eelgrass
Submerged coastal vegetation
Eelgrass is a grasslike marine plant that grows in shallow coastal waters, forming underwater meadows.
Despite the name, it has no connection to eels beyond sharing their habitat.
Eelgrass beds provide critical nursery habitat for fish and shellfish: The bay's eelgrass meadows are slowly recovering.
Also called seagrass.
