stone foundation
Masonry support structure
A stone foundation is the base of a building constructed from stone, supporting the structure above.
Before concrete became standard in the twentieth century, most permanent buildings sat on stone foundations—fieldstone, cut stone, or rubble set in mortar.
The old farmhouse still has its original stone foundation.
Homes with stone foundations often have cold, damp basements and may require specialized maintenance.
