cross-ventilation

Opposite windows, breeze

Cross-ventilation is airflow through a building created by openings on opposite or adjacent walls.

When windows or doors on different sides of a space are opened, air moves through naturally, cooling the interior without mechanical systems: The apartment has good cross-ventilation, so we rarely need air conditioning.

Architects design for cross-ventilation to reduce energy use.
