earth closet
Primitive compost latrine
An earth closet is a toilet that uses dry earth or ash instead of water to cover waste.
Common before indoor plumbing became widespread, it was a more sanitary alternative to the open pit privy.
The user would pull a lever or scoop earth over the deposit after each use.
Some environmentalists advocate modern versions as water-conserving alternatives to flush toilets.
