A direction indicator is a device that signals which way something is turning or heading.
Most commonly, it refers to a vehicle's turn signal—the blinking light that shows other drivers you intend to change lanes or turn: Don't forget to use your direction indicator before merging.
The term appears in British English and formal contexts; Americans typically say turn signal or blinker.
